I tried to post this on washingtonpost.com in response to this article (and previous comments), but for whatever reason the website would not post it. So, for what it's worth, here it is:

Re: barferio - Humanity definitely has the capacity "to do good, to hear good things, to express and experience mercy" regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof (one of my friends is a former-atheist-turned-agnostic). The funny thing, though, is that in assessing something to be "good" or "merciful" conversely also means that there is "bad" and "ruthless." Affirming that such distinctions exist also confirms there must be a value system to determine which actions are "good" and which are "bad." Religions tend to serve two purposes: first, to establish that value system; and second, to better understand the relationship/interaction (if any exists) between the ultimate starter-force of the universe and people/nature. Your frustration with so-called "christian oppression" has legitimate ground, although I would challenge you to contrast the individual/group's oppressive actions vs. the foundational principles of Christianity, which are rooted in Jesus Christ Himself, His actions, and His words.
